writing , writing prompt , writing challengeDay 9 : If you could have any job in the world, what would it be?

And that’s the million dollar question. I haven’t quite figured it out what I want my dream career to be.

I did enjoy working retail. Not so much the crap pay, hours and crappy people. I did love though, being in charge of my department, maintaining inventory, pricing and visuals. It was my own little world. I was the expert. I love redoing whole fixtures, sizing, restocking and refolding shelves creating  master pieces of displays.  I even loved Black Friday, finding and tossing jeans piles at a time to customers in record time. 13414494_10206874252195095_514131368_n

I do love my current job, working in  a day service program with people with intellectual and developmental disabilities.  It’s rewarding and gratifying work. It’s heart warming and positive. Everyday, i make a difference and that’s a good feeling. It’s tons of fun at times. It’s stressful and a lot of pressure and often times so tiring when you come home from work you have no energy to do anything.

But as for life long careers? I’m not sure.

I do know, i like to be home. I like to clean. I like to cook. I like home projects. I love tending to the dog. I love to read. I love to write. Ideally, my dream job would give me the ability to work at home, hours of my choice. It would give me freedom and flexibility to volunteer in program like i currently work, animal shelters and green earth organizations.  I just want the financial security and the freedom to invest in things I love and have the ability to satisfy all my humanitarian interests.

Do you know what the job is ? I sure haven’t figured it out…

Today for Just Jot It January, we will be combining Stream of Consciousness Saturday and JusJoJan.

The prompt for today is “Title”.

I actually struggled with this post. The goal is to jot down the first movie title that popped into your head and use that title in your post. Doesn’t necessarily have to be about the actual movie, you could drop the movie title in your post or write a post with the theme of the title. Get creative. But also this is a stream of consciousness writing.

My problem is, I’m not much of a movie watcher anymore. I don’t go to the movies, unless its for work and I’m taking a group and even then my clients choose the movie. At home, sure the hubby and I will watch a movie from time to time but we’re more of TV shows people. So, I’m sitting here trying to will a specific movie title to pop into my head.

Then, it was like flashes. Different scenes from movies were passing through my head. I felt like I was there with a net chasing trying to catch one. Still, not a specific movie was standing out.

Finally, one movie title became clear and focused. Fantastic Four.

Well, hell i couldn’t even tell you the correct tittle to the movie. It was the second Fantastic Four movie that was released over the summer. I couldn’t even tell you what the movie was about. I have never saw it.

I bet your wondering why this movie, out of all the actual movies I have saw, is popping out in front of all the others.

As you may know from previous posts, I work for a day services program.  Confidentiality and all that, I can’t give to much details. But, I have a client who is deaf. He doesn’t know English well, he is learning to read and write. He doesn’t know sign language either. He’s learning a little everyday. He’s eager to learn. It’s very hard to communicate with him. I know some American sign language and I try my best to teach signs to him. We mostly communicate with affiliation and visuals.  It makes it hard to get to know him and his interests. Most of the time, he’s a loner and content to use a computer or draw in his notebook.

One day during an outing he scared the hell out of me. He ran ahead of the group. I was like oh crap, I’m going to loose him and was having a mini panic attack. Obviously he’s deaf so i cannot call out after him. I just so happened to also have a wheelchair client that day so i couldn’t exactly ditch my wheel chair client and run after him. Thus, i had a deer and headlights moment as i realized how bad this situation is. Then as fast and randomly as he took off running, he stopped in the middle of a crowded busy street, about faced, scanned the crowd until he made eye contact with me and started  wildly waving and pointing across the street. I was too deer and headlights mode to do anything other than look to where he was gesturing . It was a city bus. The ad on the city bus was for a moving coming soon: Fantastic Four.

Then he started signing one of the few signs he knows “Good”.

When we got back to the office he ran inside and went straight to the DVD player we had and fused about looking through the DVD’s. He found the original Fantastic Four dvd and with the biggest smile ever was signing Good over and over.

When the new Fantastic Four movie came out, i requested he be taken to the movies to see it. I didn’t personally get to take him, but he did get to go.

For weeks he drew and colored various Fantastic Four symbols in his notebook.

Then, out of nowhere, he discovered Dr. Who and Fantastic Four is a thing of the past.

Persnickety.

It’s ironic.  I actually wasn’t famailar with this word. Upon reading the defination it was like a light bulb went off.

This is the problem I’m having with my current job. They’re pensnickety.

They demand attention to detail, often emphasising minor and trivial aspects.
They’re fussy.

I’ve been looking to explain my frustration with my job and could never find an adequate word to describe it.

For those that don’t know, I work in a day service program for individual with intellectual and/or developmental disabilities. We teach life skills and guide outings.

Now, I love my job. I left my retail job for this job. But, the company keeps making changes and changes.  They mean well. But, in the end all they are accomplishing is putting stress and strain on staff.

Instead of focusing on clients and their goals, they are micro managing everything else from who’s in our groups, paperwork, to when and where we do what. For a day service program, the best days with real learning experience happens unplanned. Like real life, we go out and experience the world. We learn and experience things that occur from purchasing items, finding a restroom to how to handle the crazy lady on the train. I can’t plan that. We just have to go out and see what happens. Of course, I don’t rely on happenstance. I address behaviors as they occur and I present topics and I do various work sheets (like having a class)  every morning. I do my job and do it well.

But the company being Persnickety is ruining it.

They’re certain things you can micromanage.  Then, they’re things you just have to naturally let unfold.

With my type of work, putting limits and restrictions and nit picking minor details only defers from providing the absolute  best services.

In the end, it isn’t how the company looks on paper. It’s about our clients, and if they are learning, maturing and being happy.

I awoke this morning with a little less moaning and groaning. The thought of it being Friday was like an expresso shot of energy.

Working retail for three years, weekend is usually the start of my work week. I’m used to being off Wednesday and Thursday and waking up Friday to start my work week.

It’s been three months since I’ve left retail and I still have moments of denial.  I wake up with a start some Saturdays like oh shit! Imma be late!

It’s been a grueling work week. I’m supposed to get off at 3pm. Everyday this week the earliest I’ve got home is 6pm.  And I’ve been taking work home with me.

With staff out, incidents and events left and right, it’s been an overwhelming week.

So the thought of it being Friday put a smile on my face. For once, I wasn’t stuck in the retail mind set. After today, I have the weekend off.

So,  with a little less kicking and grumbling,  I went about my morning routine. I checked the weather and it said a high of 60 today! I planned to leave the bulkly jacket home and just put on a favorite hoody and walk off into the sunset.

Imagine my surprise when I opened my front door and saw this:

It’s misty and foggy as hell. These pictures don’t capture the full effect.  So,  I had to go back inside for a jacket.
My grumpy walk to the train station.

I get asked all the time from people on blogs and fourms what it’s like in NYC, for real. Well, have a look for yourself.  This is walking from the Museum of Feelings on Vesey Street by Battery park up two blocks pass The World Center to the train station. Granted not all of Manhattan is so fancy, but the hustle and bustle is all the same.

I work in a day service program for adults with intellectual and/or developmental disabilities.

We teach life skills and promote and encourage independence.

I guide outtings and when in doors I run group lessons.

I always try to include arts and crafts. Sometimes, it’s as simple as coloring or paper plates decoration.

Being that it’s December,  I’m jumping on the Christmas theme.

Yesterday,  after doing the “work” group , I planned to have a relaxing day doing art. I printed out Christmas theme coloring pages, stockings, ornaments ,merry Christmas logos and gift tags you can decorate. My co worker printed out circulars of various stores. We were making our Christmas Wish list, they could cut out things they liked, decorate their wish list etc. Also, making Christmas cards.  We then pin up their cards and posters to spruce up the office.

While in the spirit, we got excited a little bit. We are running low on art supplies but we wanted to make some decorations. We had the bright idea to make paper snow flakes.

To mighty pinterest we went to for a tutorial.

Dude, three staff memebers later and all we managed to make was confetti.

image

We were trying so hard. Following the steps. Step one? Done. Step two? Ok got it! Step three? A little confusing but finished. Step four.. .. Wtf! How did you make this magical snow flake?!! How you go from THAT to THIS?!!

We just felt we were missing a step.

We skipped something.

Something was left out…

Then enters one of my clients.  He glanced at the tutorial and he was like I got this.

Less than four mins later,  he made this:

image

Pretty amazing right.

And that folks is the message of the day. It’s my job to teach, encourage and inspire.

But everyday my clients inspire me. The world so often tells people with disabilities that they cannot, there is no way. So often they are boxed out and over looked.

Yet here we are, three staff members baffled by a arts and crafts project we done in kindergarten.  While we’re left stumbling, trying to figure out the step we “missed” and then giving up, others tackle it head on and make their own way. It may be different, but that’s okay.

Like a snow flake, each  one of a kind and beautiful in their own way.
